Austin's economy is becoming increasingly concentrated around high-skilled technical work, strengthening one of the region's biggest advantages for founders: access to talent.

  • 11.6% of Austin jobs are in STEM (nearly double the national rate of 6.7%)

  • 150,390 STEM workers, up ~25,000 (nearly 20%) since 2020

  • Austin employs software developers at 2.28x the national concentration

The sleeper stat: Austin added ~3,000 computer hardware engineers in a single year. Concentration jumped from 1.17x to 6.03x the national average, now second only to San Jose.
